Guide to Venice
Venice, which is often nicknamed the “City of Canals”, is the capital of the Veneto, which is one of the twenty regions of Italy. This historical city is situated across many small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, and is home to some 62,000 inhabitants. Whether you are interested in the history and architecture of the city or have instead come to sample the great Italian cuisine, there is certainly something for everyone.
The most popular tourist destination remains the world famous canals. With over 150 canals, they serve the function of roads in the old historic centre, and are home to the classical Venetian Gondola. Whilst these are a hit with the tourists, the locals nowadays tend to only use these for weddings and funerals, and nowadays mostly travel on motorised waterbuses. However you decide to travel, the canals are a perfect way to explore the labyrinth of canals and historic architecture of Venice.
If you’d rather keep your feet on dry land though then why not visit the famous Piazza San Marco (or St Mark's Square as it’s known to the English), which is easily recognisable by St Mark's Campanile. This is a great place to visit and view the many historic buildings of the city, and also sit outside and enjoy a drink in one of the many cafés. However, if its peace and quiet you are after then it is doubtful you will find it here as the square is always busy with both tourists and pigeons.
If though you would prefer somewhere a bit quieter then visit one of the many restaurants in the narrow back streets. Here, eating is a relaxed and informal affair and you can enjoy traditional dishes such as homemade Pasta and Pizza.
Venetian Adventure cruise holidays from Island Cruises combines some of the most popular tourist destinations such as Rome, Pompeii, Naples and Monte Carlo. However, sailing past the stunning Adriatic coastline, the highlight of the cruise is a romantic overnight stay in the historical city of Venice.
