Guide to Portugal
Portugal is a country with outstanding natural and a wonderful climate that, particularly in the south, stays fine for much of the year – excellent if you are looking as an over 65 traveller for a winter break.
It is a country with infinite options – you can enjoy a typical beach holiday in your own villa or in a hotel in the Algarve to the south, or wander through the medieval quarters of historic cities like Lisbon or Oporto. Portugal is also one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations as well as having excellent tennis schools – with fabulous amenities, particularly in the Algarve.
Portugal is a relatively small country, yet the options within it are huge. While Lisbon is probably Europe’s most pleasant and affordable city, it contains fantastic architecture, a wonderful nightlife and restaurant culture and a diverse population.
Portugal is also largely unspoilt with countryside that exists mainly as it did 100 years ago. The most dazzling natural regions of beauty lie in the Lima, Minho and Douro valleys.
Portugal has very strong seafaring connections with a proud past including a colonial influence that was evident as recently as twenty years ago. The Algarve coast to the south of Portugal offers one of Europe’s most natural and beautiful coastlines. Ever popular with the British, it offers miles of sandy beaches and excellent amenities.
Eating out in Portugal, even in the Algarve, is relatively cheap – with the local restaurants being excellent quality and very hospitable. The seafood in Portugal is superb – with sardines, squid and many other fish readily available – and the piri piri chicken is an excellent local dish that you must try.
Accommodation and transport in Portugal are both relatively cheap but Portugal also has many properties that are truly 5 star. With the flight only just over the two hour mark, Portugal is readily accessible to the over 65s market all year round.
