Guide to Marseille
Marseilles is France’s largest commercial port and the country’s second largest city, with a population of over 1,500,000 inhabitants. Situated on the southern coast of France it provides great views over the port and Mediterranean and is the ideal getaway destination for thousands of tourists each year. Whether you come to experience the relaxed French culture, medieval architecture or great food, there is no shortage of things to see and do.
One of the most popular tourist destinations remains the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde which sits atop of the hill, La Garde. Not only does it provide the best view over Marseilles but it also provides the perfect photo opportunity of some the great architecture which can be found in this city such as the statue of the Virgin Mary and child, to the huge basilica itself. If possible then the best time of year to visit is the 15th of August when the annual pilgrimage takes place.
If after walking up the hill though you find yourself worn out, then slowly head down to the port to explore the fish market. From first thing in the morning the market is full of freshly caught fish and you should definitely try bouillabaisse which is a traditional fish stew originating from Marseilles. However, if all this talk of fish is making you feel ill then instead have a walk around the port to sample the many restaurants and cafes. With French cuisine being arguably the best in the world there is an endless choice of quality food available in Marseilles.
Certainly, after visiting Marseilles you will want to return to the French Riviera. However, perhaps you would rather explore more of France – with a cruise holiday with Island Cruises you can, offering stops at other historical French cities such as Nice and Toulon, and other countries in and around the Mediterranean.
