Guide to Germany
Germany is often not the first holiday destination one thinks of when planning a trip but, if you are looking for something slightly different, then Germany is the perfect choice for an over 65 holiday. With romantic, scenic landscapes, enchanting castles, historic and cosmopolitan cities and friendly people, Germany has everything to offer the tourist.
Germany is home to 81 million people – the largest nation in Europe. It stretches from the Baltic and North Seas in the north to the Black Forest and the snow capped mountains of the Bavarian Alps. The country also has at least 5 major geographical regions, each completely different in character and culture. This is because Germany is made up of what was, up until 150 years ago, separate states. Hence, it also has many major cities each with its own unique character.
In the north of Germany visit Hamburg, Bremen or Lubeck, cities that have thrived from the shipping trade. Berlin, of course, is one of Europe’s major tourist destinations. Dominated by its wall until 1990, the city has everything a tourist could possibly want from a cosmopolitan urban area. Other major cities include Hannover in the centre of Germany and Leipzig, Dresden, Weimar and Schwerin to the East – not to forget Nuremberg and Munich towards the south and Cologne and Bonn and the Rhineland to the west.
Of great interest for any over 65 tourist is Germany’s cuisine. In addition to top quality international cooking, each region has its own dedicated specialities. And that’s not to mention the excellent beers and wines that are available.
Today Germany is a multi-cultural feast for any over 65 tourist with so much to do and see. Whether you fly or travel by land you can be assured of an excellent welcome.
