Guide to France

No other country in Europe is more accessible to the British than France. The opening of the Channel Tunnel has now made France as accessible as anywhere in the UK – now just a 3 hour train journey away (to Paris) or a 50 minute plane journey.

The convenience of travelling to France makes it perfect for the over 65s traveller. You can take your own car and explore the hidden treasures of northern France with its poppy fields and monuments or the south if you are more adventurous.

Believe it or not, France is the most popular tourist destination in Europe with over 56 million visitors each year. Its attraction can probably be laid somewhere between its sophistication and the fact that it has got just about everything a tourist could possibly want – trendy, sophisticated cities, fantastic cuisine, tranquil rivers and woodland, beaches, countryside, vineyards and wine.

The national fascination with good food is a particular attraction to the over 65s traveller. Enjoy a fine meal in contrasting surroundings from the pavements of Paris or overlooking the Mediterranean at Cannes. The attraction is the same and with France’s wonderful transport links, getting from north to south is not difficult or time consuming – a fact certainly worth considering if you don’t want to drive.

Northern France is now particularly popular with British expatriates who are settling there to avoid the bustle of British life but so that they still have the fast connections. A trip to Paris can now also take in Disneyland Resort Paris with the grandchildren (or even without) as well as the sights and scenes of Paris itself.

France is a great travel destination for the over 65s. It’s quick and convenient travel wise and has a level of culture and sophistication that will definitely appeal. Cost wise it is very competitive too outside of the main cities so you should be able to make your Pound go further.
