Guide to the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are situated off the north west coast of Africa and are part of Spain. They comprise 7 islands which are divided into 2 provinces. Las Palmas comprises Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to the East while Santa Cruz de Tenerife comprises Tenerife, La Palma, Gomero and Hierro to the West.

Ever popular with over 65 tourists, the Canary Islands enjoy a wonderful climate with good sunny weather all year round. Each island has its own peculiar landscape but the region is of volcanic origin and enjoys a great variety of scenery including mountain ranges, valleys, deserts, cliffs, craters and forests.

Of course, many tourists visit the islands for the weather and there are many wonderful sandy beaches and resorts to choose from. But, beyond the beaches is an absorbing local culture and breathtaking scenery. The islands have an eternal spring/summer climate which makes it perfect for a winter as well as a summer holiday – though it can be very busy between December and March because of this. Spring is often recognised as a perfect time to visit.

The islands that make up the Canaries are actually the tips of underwater volcanoes. The western region is generally mountainous while the eastern islands are flatter and sandier. Tenerife is probably the most well known and popular of the islands and it offers the widest variety of tourist attractions. Lanzarote is also highly popular yet the island has retained much of its older character, while Gran Canaria is probably the most visited.

Wherever you choose to travel in the Canary Islands you will experience a wonderful climate and all that an over 65 holidaymaker could wish for.
