12 September 2006  Which?: Tough to find senior travel insurance
Elderly travellers looking to purchase OAP travel insurance for their trips abroad are finding it difficult to find cover, a new report shows.

Holiday Which? magazine explored the industry and found that some companies refuse to offer travel insurance over 65 and some others charge "massive" premiums.

The article notes: "Several readers told us that the ordeal of finding suitable travel insurance meant they were thinking of risking a trip to Europe with only the medical cover of the European Health Insurance Card.

"In countries where public hospitals are few and far between, the health insurance card does not offer sufficient cover. Also you would not be covered if you needed to be repatriated for any reason."

Commenting on these issues, Kelly Ostler of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has urged the elderly to shop around for senior travel insurance and to make sure the policy they choose covers them for all activities they may participate in while away.

The ABI has also told those looking for OAP travel insurance to remember to inform their insurer of any pre-existing medical conditions to ensure they do not invalidate their cover.
