11 October 2006  UK and Ireland popular with over-65s
A survey of UK holidaymakers by an insurance provider has found that over-65s, some travelling with senior travel insurance, are more likely to take their trips within the UK and to Ireland than elsewhere.

The study by AXA insurance reported that three quarters of those over 65 chose to take their holidays in the UK or Ireland in 2006, compared to 68 per cent of all those surveyed.

Nick Kidd, head of lifestyle protection and household claims at AXA Insurance, commented that with increasing sums being spent on holidays it is "now more important than ever" for holidaymakers to purchase travel insurance - which would also include OAP travel insurance for senior travellers.

"The reality is you don't know what could happen to you while on holiday and travel insurance is therefore as important as taking your passport or toothbrush."

In March this year, the Post Office claimed that Europe was the most popular destination for UK travellers, with 43 per cent of holidays in 2005 being taken on the continent.
