17 June 2006  Travellers urged to prepare for travel
The ministry for foreign affairs and trade (MFAT) in New Zealand has launched a new awareness campaign designed to make travellers more prepared when they are away on holiday.

The MFAT is responsible for ensuring travellers are safe abroad and say that it is essential that people take out travel insurance when they leave the country.

Foreign minister, Winston Peters who is launching the campaign, said: "Take insurance, for example. Many people travelling to places like Australia wouldn’t think twice about insuring themselves for the trip. But medical problems can strike anywhere, and overseas taxpayers don’t tend to pick up the tab for New Zealanders."

For elderly travellers New Zealand authorities recommend senior travel insurance which can be bought in the form of travel insurance for over 65s or OAP travel insurance.

This will give extra cover for elderly people in case of an emergency.

As part of the new initiative people can also register their details on a nationwide database so that they are easily contactable if something should go wrong when they or a loved one are on holiday.
