29 January 2007  Travellers 'trust user-generated reviews' on holidays
UK holidaymakers, such as those with OAP travel insurance, trust user-generated content online more than other sources of information when booking holidays on the internet, according to a recent study.

Research commissioned by Advida found that 62 per cent of Britons use search engines online when booking their holidays, while 36 per cent will use a travel agents website.

The study found that 21 per cent of those questioned believed that websites featuring user-generated content gave the most reliable information, ahead of 15 per cent for professional travel review sites.

Alex Burmaster, European internet analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings, said: "Whether you refer to it as user-generated content, the people's internet or Web 2.0, travellers are turning to the collective knowledge and opinion of people they trust the most when booking holidays - each other."

Last April, senior travel insurance provider Saga reported that 33 per cent of over-50s will use newspapers and the internet to search for a good deal on foreign currency when going abroad.
