02 August 2006  Travel insurance costs 'should drop'
Senior travellers no longer pose the same risks for travel insurers as they did ten years ago, according to Insuresupermarket.

Responding to recent findings by Moneysupermarket, which revealed those buying travel insurance over 65 face premium price hikes of more than 100 per cent, Peter Gerrard, a senior researcher at Insuresupermarket, commented that, due to healthier lifestyles older people looking for senior travel insurance now pose less of a risk.

As a result, consumers should see the discriminatory prices dropping in future, Mr Gerrard suggests.

Mr Gerrard stated: "It will take one provider to be brave enough to do it and the others will follow suit. We have seen it before with competition.

"Travel insurance is a very competitive market and it just needs one provider to that and we will see a whole host following."

Other issues which insurers need to take into account, according to Mr Gerrard, include the fact although mature travellers maybe more prone to heart attacks and other illnesses, they are much less likely to engage in dangerous sporting and reckless drunken activities that younger travellers do.
