02 September 2006  Travel agents criticised for withdrawing protection
Coming after an investigation last month into the mis-selling of travel insurance, including OAP travel insurance, travel agents have now been criticised by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The OFT has removed the Association of British Travel Agents' (ABTA) code from its approved list after the group announced that it will no longer compensate those who have lost money paid to dishonest travel agents.

Colin Brown, OFT director of marketing transformation, said: "We are disappointed that ABTA has taken the decision to change its code and withdraw from the scheme.

"The new ABTA code differs from the previous one in a number of ways, including significant changes to its financial protection scheme."

Halifax tells its customers to get evidence of the security of their booking with a financial protection organisation while the Civil Aviation Authority has warned that standard travel insurance over 65 often does not cover for travel company collapse and extra cover may be necessary.
