A growing number of Britons are taking their digital camera away on holiday with them, making it increasingly important for holidaymakers to ensure they have appropriate protection, such as OAP travel insurance, an insurer has warned.

A poll for esure Travel Insurance found that 73 per cent of people admitted to taking a digital camera away with them on holiday.

As UK holiday makers grow ever more "snap happy", the ICM survey of just over 1,000 adults also found that 30 per cent of travellers don't leave home without their camcorder, while a further 73 per cent carry their mobile phone on them while on vacation.

Commenting on the findings, Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at esure, said that while people relied heavily on such equipment to make a record of their holiday, they often forgot how susceptible their possessions were to damage in hot climes, stressing the need to have adequate insurance cover, which would include senior travel insurance.

"Having adequate travel insurance cover is essential for peace of mind ? especially when it comes to protecting these desirable and expensive must-have gadgets,? said Ms Brown.

The importance of having travel insurance over 65 or at any age was highlighted by a separate study published by Sainsbury's Bank earlier this month, which found that medical costs accounted for 36 per cent of its travel insurance claims over the past five years, closely followed by cancellation costs, which made up 18 per cent of total claims.

Claims for lost baggage, money or documents made up 13 per cent of claims.
