06 June 2006 Senior travellers face limited insurance options
Holidaymakers searching for travel insurance over 65-years-old will be turned down by 30 of the 140 annual travel insurance policies currently available on the market, according to figures from the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA).
Increasing numbers of mature travellers are choosing to take more adventurous and longer trips requiring senior travel insurance and a new survey from specialist travel insurance broker RIAS has revealed that around 775,000 of those aged 55 or over have taken an extended holiday abroad, the Times Online reports.
Dave Foyle, of Bradford & Bingley commented: "The two age groups to show the steepest increase in international travel since 1993 are those aged 55 to 64, with a 140 per cent increase, and the over-65s, with a 110 per cent increase."
However, once travellers reach the age of 70 they are excluded from more than 105 travel insurance policies.
"The main reasons are that we are enjoying better health for longer, and this generation has more money to spend in retirement. Many travel for a few months at a time, which used to be more common among those in their twenties or thirties," Mr Foyle added.
According to seniorscopie.com, one in ten travellers aged over 65 does not take out insurance before going on holiday.
