Rome has seen a renewed surge in popularity with tourists, a percentage of who will have taken out senior travel insurance policies, since last summer, putting it ahead of other destinations, according to figures from online travel agency Citybreaks-Direct.

The death of the former pope, which was televised sending images of the city around the world, is cited as one of the main reasons for the city new-found popularity among tourists and those taking out travel insurance, according to 999 Today.

Paul Reeve of Citybreaks-Direct said: "We have been monitoring the search terms customers use when they visit the site, as well as the actual bookings and Rome is the European city that heads the list."

Literature and films also play a large part in inspiring travel with the recent release of the Da Vinci Code inspiring many travellers, including those with senior travel insurance, to pay a visit to the film's historic locations.

According to the figures Rome is currently more popular that previous top cities, Dublin, Prague and Amsterdam.

The main tourist season in Rome runs from Easter to October with the spring and autumn being the peak visiting periods, according to the Lonely Planet travel site.
