British retirees are much more likely to splash out on a new car than the younger generations, according to a new survey by AA Personal Loans.

More than two in five over 50s have stated that they plan to by a new car in the next year, in which to hit the open road for trips that many of them will take out senior travel insurance for.

The survey of a representative sample of 4,000 Brits revealed, that of the 21 per cent of drivers planning to buy a new car in the next 12 months over half admitted that they were looking to buy a brand new vehicle.

General manager of AA Personal Loans, Lloyd East, commented: "With increasing costs of bringing up a family, people under 50 are finding it more difficult to afford the luxuries in life."

Retirees however are increasingly choosing to spend the money they have worked for and a whole new generation of those who plan to spend their kids' inheritance (Ski) on trips abroad and senior travel insurance have been labelled the Ski generation.
