28 October 2006 Poll reveals travel trends
Holidaymakers are increasingly likely to undertake adventure activities while abroad, according to new research, a trend which should be heeded by those thinking of taking out senior travel insurance and other types of cover.
A survey conducted by TripAdvisor found that 39 per cent of travellers intended to take up adventure activities such as parasailing and white water rafting on their next holiday, up from 29 per cent last year.
The website, which provides reviews and information about holiday destinations, also found that 43 per cent were likely to go hiking on their holidays, up from 24 per cent a year ago and perhaps indicating the increasing need for people to make sure they are fully covered by the appropriate OAP travel insurance or other insurance in the case of an accident.
In contrast, TripAdvisor's annual travel trends survey of 4,000 people found that relaxing in a spa was becoming less popular amongst holiday makers, which 47 per cent of travellers intending to indulge in the tamer activity this year, down from 55 per cent last year.
Separate research published by TripAdvisor also shows more exotic locations such as Turkey, Morocco and Peru are now topping the list of holiday hotspots amongst travellers, again making it more important to obtain the appropriate holiday insurance, including travel insurance over 65.
The poll follows research published last month by Saga, the specialist travel firm for older people, which showed that those aged over 50 who owned caravans were more likely to venture abroad than their younger counterparts.
