21 December 2006  People 'should claim as soon as possible' on insurance
Individuals looking to claim on an insurance policy, such as those with senior travel insurance, have been advised to inform their insurer as soon as possible of the incident that has occurred for which they wish to claim.

While procedure can differ depending on the insurance and the type of policy bought, the Co-operative Bank recommends early reporting of incidents, while noting that if its own policy holders inform them of incidents later it generally is not a large problem.

Andy Hammerton, spokesperson for Co-operative Bank, said: "People should notify us as soon as possible and I would expect them to.

"We do get occasional cases of people who've left it for a long period of time, but on the whole it's certainly not a problem we've had."

The British Insurance Brokers Association also reported that late claims on policies, such as OAP travel insurance, are not a common problem.

It added that if an individual felt that an insurance company was acting unfairly that the Financial Ombudsman would "step in" to ensure fairness.
