02 March 2007  Pension-busting bill rises 'are unfair'
Following reports that the average water bill will rise by seven per cent this year, an international charity for the elderly has slammed the increase as being unacceptable.

Help the Aged reports that the price increase will make the average water and sewerage bill £312, making up an increasing portion of household expenses for pensioners.

Anna Pearson, senior policy officer at the charity, said: "Yet another household bill rises way beyond inflation this year, leaving many older people facing cut-backs on their spending in other areas such as food and clothing."

She added that it was "unfair, unjust and unacceptable" that increases in energy bills, council tax and water rates are permitted to far outpace rises in the basic state pension.

The organisation urged elderly people to install water meters in their homes, as they could potentially result in lower bills.

Last month, Age Concern called for energy suppliers to minimise the effect of their price rises on elderly people to enable them to stay warm in winter.
