21 June 2007  Package holidays offer 'advantages and protections'
Package holidays offer "financial protection" that is not always in place when holidays are not booked through a tour operator, a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has said.

While travel insurance can offer those on package holidays, including seniors, a degree of peace of mind, the protection offered with package holidays can further reassure holidaymakers.

Abta spokesperson Sean Tipton said: "If you book a package holiday and the airline goes bust then the tour operator has to get you home free of charge. That is their problem, not yours!

"If your tour operator goes out of business then either Abta or Atol [Air Travel Organisers' Licensing] will get you home free of charge."

Atol figures this week suggested that the number of people booking holidays through Atol holders fell in the 12 months to September 2006, with a two per cent drop found in the numbers.

Abta was formed in 1950 with just over 100 members, a number that has since climbed to 6,000 travel agencies and 850 tour operators.
