12 April 2006  Over 50s most savvy with holiday cash
Consumers aged 50 and over, including those with senior travel insurance, are better at organising their holiday cash than other generations, a survey has found.

Saga discovered that 79 per cent of the group actively look for the best foreign exchange deals and claimed that the generation was the most likely to find the best deals for their cash before heading out abroad.

Four in five told the company that they arranged foreign exchange prior to arriving at their destination, ensuring they would be less likely to pay over the odds at foreign bureau de charges.

In addition, 55 per cent said that they would expect to pay no commission, the largest proportion of any group asked. However, Saga said that the group, members of which could eligible for elderly travel insurance, is still missing out on £245 million in savings every year by picking the wrong exchange provider.

"People spend a lot of time planning for their holiday and finding the right destination, but clearly leave more to chance when it comes to making the most of their holiday money," said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga.
