04 March 2006  Over 65s issued travel insurance advice
Elderly people keen to take advantage of the last few months of the ski season have been advised to ensure that they are covered by senior travel insurance.

Concerns have been raised in particular for those travelling to the USA and Canada after research from Norwich Union revealed that they are the most expensive countries for medical and emergency care.

In the event of an accident on the slopes, in the USA it can cost up to £20,000 to treat a broken leg, while Canada is almost as pricey with treatment totalling roughly £13,000.

"People should remember to take out travel insurance with winter sports optional cover before hitting the slopes," said Dawn McMullan, travel product manager at Norwich Union.

"If you do happen to break a leg or incur any other sort of injury, it's stressful enough having to go to hospital, worry about your health and change all your holiday plans without having to think about the financial aspect of your injury."

Those from the older generation are advised that travel insurance for over 65s is also vital in European destinations as the European Union Health Insurance Card might not cover all the costs of services such as medical care, mountain rescue and repatriation.
