05 July 2007  Older travellers 'opting for more long-haul destinations'
Rather than making do with a domestic break or a trip to a nearby European country, increasing numbers of older Britons may be picking up their senior travel insurance and heading further abroad than ever before.

Over-50s service provider Saga reports that the proportion of UK and European holidays compared to long-haul destinations sold by the firm has decreased over the past decade.

Furthermore, the choices of holidaymakers opting for long-haul flights have also become more exotic.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Favourite long-haul destinations ten years ago would have been America and Canada, whereas today South Africa, New Zealand, China and South America are in our top ten long-haul holidays."

She added that the company's long-haul business has approximately doubled in the last ten years, while the number of passengers on its cruise ships has quadrupled.

Last month, the Post Office reported that the growth in its sales of currency for China, Dubai and Egypt was outstripping that of perennial holiday favourites Greece and Spain.
