16 May 2006  Older travellers need cover too
The number of travellers aged over-65 taking international trips has increased by 110 per cent since 1993, with a growing number of wealthy retirees taking longer breaks to exotic locations, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

Bradford & Bingley broker, Dave Foyle, commenting on those taking out senior travel insurance, said: "We have lots of calls from retirees planning holidays that include activities such as swimming with dolphins in Florida or diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

"Many even opt to travel for a few months at a time, which used to be more common among people in their twenties or thirties."

However, one in ten of these mature adventurers fails to take out travel insurance, even for more exotic and dangerous locations and activities.

According to the figures from the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, senior travel insurance premiums rise prohibitively for those over 50-years-old and over two-thirds of travel policies exclude those over 70-years-old.

Travel insurance companies argue that senior travellers are more likely to make claims, especially for medical reasons and therefore should be charged higher premiums.

Yet, the Times warns senior travellers for reasons of medical security elderly travellers should ensure they do have the correct senior traveller insurance cover, especially when travelling in the US.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises all travellers going to the USA that comprehensive travel and medical insurance is essential.
