12 July 2007 Older people 'should be prioritised' in housing drive
Following a speech yesterday to the House of Commons by Gordon Brown calling for an increase in available affordable housing, a leading charity for the elderly has called on the prime minister to prioritise the needs of older Britons in these efforts.
Help the Aged has urged the prime minister to extend his support for affordable housing to "lifetime homes" and mixed neighbourhoods for older and younger residents.
The charity stated that there exists a need for houses that are affordable over the course of a lifetime and rejects a focus only on retirement villages and other segregated homes for the elderly.
Joe Oldman, senior policy adviser at Help the Aged, said: "Given we will experience a rapid expansion in older households over the next twenty years, older people can no longer be considered a marginal group within housing policy."
He added that there is a need for a nationwide Decent Homes Plus programme that would enable older Britons to retain their independence within their own homes.
In his speech before the Commons, the prime minister outlined three parliamentary bills that will aim to provide three million new homes for families across Britain by 2020.
