18 May 2007  Older people 'need Post Office alternatives'
Following a government announcement regarding a reduction to the nationwide Post Office network, a leading charity for the elderly has called for the provision of viable alternative service provisions that recognise the key role played by post offices in local communities.

Help the Aged has claimed that the closure of post offices around the country will leave older Britons "devastated", as many rely on this network for essential services including bill-paying and the collection of pensions or other benefits.

Post offices in the UK offer a range of facilities to customers beyond mail services, including the processing of driver's licences, foreign currency exchange and the provision of personal loans and OAP travel insurance.

Mervyn Kohler, head of public affairs at Help the Aged, said: "The government must now come up with alternatives that recognise the social and economic importance of the network and the vital role post office play in communities."

He added that there is "no time to lose" in providing alternative service provision for elderly Britons who do not have access to the internet or a car.
