01 May 2007  Older people 'denied IT learning opportunities'
Older Britons are missing out on the opportunity to boost their employability, with many being denied the chance to increase their level of IT skills, it has been claimed.

Leading charity Age Concern reports government figures revealing that a fifth of employees aged 50-59 have had recent IT training, compared to a third of those aged 25-49.

In response, the organisation has launched a BT-supported digital inclusion network that aims to provide IT training to senior Britons without the use of complex jargon.

James Purnell, minister with responsibility for e-government at the department of work and pensions, said: "In a world that is becoming increasingly reliant upon information technology, it is vital that we ensure older people aren't left out."

He added that Britain must confront inaccurate stereotypes of older Britons being fearful of advances made in technology.

In May 2006, the Association of British Travel Agents reported that increasing numbers of Britons are booking holidays online and urged travellers to ensure to check for recognised industry endorsement when buying on the web.
