13 June 2007  Older Britons' 'lives not improving'
The lives of elderly people in the UK have not improved over the past year, according to a recent survey, while almost a third believe that their quality of life has in fact worsened in the past 12 months.

A study from Help the Aged reveals that 28 per cent of older Britons perceive that their life has got worse in the past year, part of 93 per cent who have not registered any improvement.

Retirees expressed discontent at age discrimination, high council tax, general poverty and loneliness.

Paul Cann, director of policy at the charity, said: "'If steps are not taken to enable people to carry on working and saving, to improve public health and to ensure that adequate social care is available for those who need it, growing numbers of people will be blighted by disadvantage in older age."

He added that the number of Britons aged over 65 is expected to rise by more than 50 per cent over the next quarter of a century.

In March 2007, a joint report from Help the Aged and Age Concern found that older Britons are at a "considerable disadvantage" when looking to purchase senior travel insurance.
