15 August 2007  Older Britons 'let down' by mental health bill
Older people are not being afforded adequate services and support in the UK, it has been claimed, while the scale of mental health problems for the elderly is being vastly underestimated.

The final report from the UK Inquiry into Mental Health and Well-Being in Later Life supported by Age Concern reveals that 3.5 million older people are suffering from mental health problems, with 2.6 million suffering from depression.

Dr June Crown, chairman of the inquiry, said: "Mental health problems in later life are not an inevitable part of ageing.

"They are often preventable and treatable and action to improve the lives of older people who experience mental health difficulties is long overdue."

She added that that existing services for older mental health sufferers are inadequate in scope, availability and quality.

Earlier this month, Help the Aged called on the government to make the prevention and treatment of dementia a priority in light of an increasingly ageing population.
