09 August 2007  Older Britons 'investing in alternative assets'
While Britons approaching retirement are often advised to spend their money investing in the stock market in order to build up a retirement nest egg, many are now looking into collectibles as an asset that will accrue value over time.

Recently published research from Direct Line reveals that around £2.5 billion has been spent on collectibles in the past five years, ranging from royal memorabilia to antique glass and ceramics.

Jamie Breese, antiques and collectibles expert at ITV, said: "Alternative assets are a valid form of investment and this research proves just how popular they've become."

A quarter of collectors reportedly believe that their stash may go up in value and with a five pound note from 1907 now worth £150, it seems they may be right.

In February 2006, Invesco Perpetual suggested the infatuation with collectibles may have gone too far perhaps, with supposedly five per cent of people surveyed believing that investment bonds relate to the purchase of James Bond merchandise.
