25 May 2007  Older Britons 'huge contributors to culture and wealth'
Elderly Britons are not a "drain on society", and in fact are net contributors to the financial and cultural health of the UK, it has been reported.

Research from HSBC on the future of retirement found that through tax, volunteer work and assistance for family members, older Britons give a genuine boost to the economy of the country, while making vital contributions to social care nationwide.

The study also showed that improvements in health mean that older people are far more active than in the past with an improved quality of life.

Stephen Green, group chairman of HSBC, said: "We are living longer and, in many societies, living better than ever."

He added that concerns regarding future retirement funding should not affect how the nation views the immense contribution made by older people to the lives of all.

In February 2007, the Foreign & Commonwealth Officer advised older Britons to take out senior travel insurance when heading abroad, noting a rise in the number of over-50s engaging in adventure activities overseas.
