03 August 2007  Older Britons 'hit daily by discrimination'
It has been claimed that older people in Britain are facing a daily bombardment with age discrimination, with the only solution to this problem being a change in government legislation.

Help the Aged has welcomed recent plans outlined in a Communities and Local Government committee equality report calling for the introduction of a single equality bill.

Kate Jopling, head of public affairs at the charity, said: "Until there is a change in legislation, older people will continue to face a daily barrage of demoralising and unreasonable discrimination because of their age."

She added that changes in legislation can take on board the experiences of similar laws addressing other forms of discrimination in Britain and elsewhere, with it being far from impossible to gain equality for older people.

In June 2007, Communities and Local Government reported that anti-discrimination law is currently enshrined in nine key pieces of legislation, with the department arguing clarification of the law into a Single Equality Act will result in increased fairness.
