29 May 2007  Old folks cause a big s-s-sensation
The Zimmers, a newly formed band including 40 members all over the age of 60, has this week released their debut single, a cover of the 1965-hit My Generation by The Who.

While The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey - both over-60 themselves - have been performing the number on tour themselves over the past few years, The Zimmers' version was played last night as the finale of a BBC2 documentary detailing the lives of the elderly in the UK.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said: "The fantastic energy of the band members shows that age is a cause for celebration, not commiseration."

He added that for elderly people in the 21st century, their twilight years can be a time of enjoying new hobbies with their free time after retirement.

Earlier this month, OAP travel insurance provider intone reported that Britons over-50 are now taking an increasing number of trips abroad compared to older people in the 50 years ago.
