28 June 2007  New PM 'should make older people a priority'
Gordon Brown, the new prime minister, has been urged to make older people a key priority of his premiership in order to reduce the disadvantages suffered by elderly people in Britain.

Age Concern has set out five key areas for Mr Brown to address now he has replaced Tony Blair as head of the cabinet.

These include a fundamental reform of the social care system, abolition of compulsory retirement ages, an immediate restoration of the link between state pensions and earnings, putting the dignity of the elderly at the heart of the health services and improving skill levels for older workers.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, commented that Mr Brown made a significant difference to the lives of the elderly as chancellor, but must continue this task as prime minister.

"Only by setting the issues facing older people as his priority will Brown successfully challenge the disadvantages and inequalities facing too many older people," he said.

Gordon Brown became prime minister on Wednesday this week and is appointing his first cabinet today.
