26 April 2007 National debate launched on funding of long-term care
A coalition of health and care organisations has announced the launch of a nationwide debate to discuss the future of the long-term care of the elderly in the UK.
Caring Choices - a group comprised of Help the Aged, Age Concern, the King's Fund and Joseph Rowntree Foundation - will host seven debates across the country with the aim of determining the path towards a fairer system of long-term care funding.
Key issues to be discussed at these regional debates include the questions of who should pay for long-term care, the encouragement given to individuals and families to pay some costs and the incentivisation of informal care in the future.
Mervyn Kohler, head of public affairs at Help the Aged, said: "Many people get a nasty surprise when they develop care needs and discover that they may have to pick up the bill."
He added that a balance must be struck between contributions from individuals and the state, while it is important that this decision is not solely made by the government.
Last month, director of Age Concern Gordon Lishman stated that the future of long-term care must encompass a focus on prevention in addition to enhanced cooperation between the NHS and social services.
