11 June 2007  NCC backs possible rethink on post office closures
The National Consumer Council (NCC) has announced its support for an announcement from the trade and industry select committee stating that an additional report will be published relating to the restructuring of the Post Office network.

Claiming that a system replacing accounts with hole-in-the-wall cash withdrawal would be insufficient, the council has called for the establishment of a replacement account that provides a range of features, such as interest, a deposit function and bill payments.

Jill Johnstone, director of policy at the NCC, said: "The Post Office provides much valued products and services to vulnerable people and those in rural and deprived urban communities.

"We need a replacement Post Office Card Account that fits the bill."

The council has also supported calls from the select committee to extend the consultation period on this decision from six to 12 weeks.

Last month, Help the Aged claimed that older Britons would be "devastated" by the mass closure of post offices nationwide, with many relying on the institution for key services.
