25 July 2006  Mature travellers 'opt for adventure'
Two in three people over the age of 55 who have chosen to take an extended holiday or mature gap year of six months or more, have chosen to head to a long-haul destination, according to a recent survey.

Research from senior travel insurance specialist, RIAS showed that 25 per cent of the 775,000 mature travellers taking an extended trip chose to head to Australia or New Zealand.

travel insurance over 65 is becoming an increasingly common request, according to managing director of RIAS, Janet Connor.

Ms Connor stated: "We are seeing an increasing number of older people requesting travel insurance not only for longer periods than the standard one or two week holiday, but also to cover travel to a variety of long haul destinations, often requesting additional cover to include adventure activities such as diving and snowboarding."

The survey revealed that one in five of those aged 55 and over would prefer to have an adventure holiday, for which they would require special senior travel insurance, rather than a beach holiday, a cultural trip or a cruise.

RIAS advise those looking to purchase senior travel insurance for an extended trip to ensure that they pay any premiums to cover existing medical conditions, as this could save thousands of pounds in event of illness.
