20 August 2007  Lack of footcare services 'affecting over-65s'
A third of Britons aged over 65 are unable to cut their own toenails, while footcare services are being increasingly withdrawn or restricted on the health service, it has been claimed.

Research from Age Concern reveals that older Britons are being forced to rely on their charitable services or pay out for private footcare, with lack of services potentially resulting in falls, restricted mobility and social isoliation.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said: "Footcare services are failing older people, and a postcode lottery is leaving those in some areas without any services at all."

He added that such services should be free and universally available, with it incumbent upon the Department of Health to include chiropody in the 18-week targets for maximum waiting time before treatment.

Last week, Age Concern claimed that older people are being let down by mental health services in the UK, with an inquiry supported by the charity making 35 recommendations to enhance such services for elderly patients.
