Venice and Rome have been named as the most desirable destinations by a new travel survey.

Popular with a wide range of tourists, including older travellers, the cities are arguably two of the most romantic in the world.

TripAdvisor's survey found that 70 per cent of its respondents would shun Eastern Europe this year in favour of more traditional Western European destinations.

Out of all the places to visit, Italy topped the poll in city choice as well as in the food stakes - over half judged the country to be the best to visit for high quality cuisine.

With their lively piazzas, beautiful churches and glorious architecture, Rome and Venice are a top choice for older tourists covered by OAP travel insurance.

For elderly tourists intent on visiting Europe this year, senior travel insurance can provide peace of mind as well as help in any unforeseen circumstances, such as flight cancellations or illness.
