14 December 2006  Insurers 'should check health conditions'
Holidaymakers should ensure that their insurance company takes the effort to check their pre-existing medical conditions to guarantee they are properly covered, according to a senior travel insurance provider.

Saga notes that travellers should check their policy thoroughly before travel to guarantee they are adequately covered and suggested telephoning an insurer to discuss any details as an alternative to reading through "reams" of documentation.

Lisa Harris, a spokesperson for the company, said: "The best thing to check is 'Do they meet my needs and have they checked my health?'

"Quite usually, if you are not asked about medical conditions then you are not covered."

She added that travellers should also make sure that their policy covers them for any activities they may undertake when on holiday.

In October, AA Travel Insurance warned that many people purchasing cover through a travel agent, including OAP travel insurance, may not be covered if they do not declare any pre-existing medical conditions.
