24 May 2007  Insurance industry 'does not discriminate against cancer victims'
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has hit back against claims that the travel insurance industry discriminates against those who have fallen victim to cancer.

Earlier this week on BBC2's Working Lunch, Ayesha Owusu-Barnaby of Macmillan Cancer Support claimed that travel insurance premiums for those that have recovered from the disease are extortionate and do not properly reflect the risks involved.

In response, the ABI reports that the industry does not "cherry pick" travellers it insures and notes that specialist insurance companies, such as those offering travel insurance over 65, can provide adequate cover at a reasonable price.

Speaking to the same programme, spokesman Malcolm Tarling said: "The insurance industry wants to provide travel insurance to as many people as possible.

"We recognise that there are a growing number of people who want to travel and need to travel but have serious medical conditions."

Earlier this month, research from OAP travel insurance provider intone revealed that older Britons have an adventurous lifestyle that provides a stark contrast with that of pensioners half a century ago.
