17 April 2007  Insurance costs 'can double for over-65s'
Britons looking to purchase OAP travel insurance before heading abroad could be paying double the price of younger travellers, it has been claimed.

Recently published research from Monesupermarket.com reveals that the price of senior travel insurance can double when holidaymakers hit their 66th birthday, while the over-70s face another doubling in the cost of cover.

The financial services comparison firm has called for travel insurance providers to offer a fairer assessment of the risk involved when calculating the cost of OAP travel insurance.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at the company, said:" Older people should not be penalised for going abroad and should be able to find fairly priced travel insurance, whatever their age."

He added that older travellers should not be put-off purchasing senior travel insurance as a result of a pre-existing medical condition, but should ensure that they mention these ailments to their insurer when buying cover.

Earlier this month, Halifax advised holidaymakers to disclose all details of pre-existing medical conditions to their travel insurance provider in addition to checking for any exclusions to their policy.
