When planning a trip overseas, mature travellers may think they have covered all of the essentials with tickets, senior travel insurance and sun cream, however a new American website launched last month suggests there are more precautions to be taken.

Beth Holloway Twitty, creator of the new safe travels foundation website, has established a forum to provide people with necessary facts and contacts and to inform them of the need to plan ahead when visiting foreign climes, providing key information and contacts for 50 countries worldwide.

She herself experienced disaster first-hand when her daughter went missing on a trip to the Caribbean.

Ms Twitty explained: "When you're in a crisis like that, time is of the essence. You have to be able to find those key contacts as quickly as you can."

Speaking of the support she received, Ms Twitty added: "I always said if I could ever give something back to their sons and daughters or to the elderly travelers or female travelers, I would. I feel as if that time has come now."

The site is a US tax-exempt charity to which travellers can sign up for free and gain important information to help them travel more safely.
