29 April 2006 Indian travel market catering for old travellers
India's travel market is catering for older travellers, including those with senior travel insurane, more than ever as retired people flock to exotic destinations.
As the number of older tourists grows by 20 per cent on last year, firms such as Thomas Cook are reportedly about to cash in on this surge by drawing them to the sub-continent.
According to India's Economic Times, Aashutosh Akshikar, head of travel businesses at Thomas Cook in India, said that the company had "aggressive plans" to target older travellers from 2007. And while the over-50s form half of all tour groups, even the over 80s are to be targeted as they increase the destinations that they travel to.
While younger people often want to backpack and do their own tours, or else stay in family resorts, many of the older generation, who are eligible for senior travel insurance, are happier to go on organised tours at a leisurely pace, which India's tourist market is likely to target.
In addition to India, other far flung destinations such as New Zealand and Australia as well as the far east are said to be appealing more to older tourists.
However, with India's host of famous locations from New Delhi and the Taj Mahal to the famous pink city of Jaipur and its temples, there are many routes for tour groups in the country.
While many tour operators such as Kuoni are reportedly not currently targeting senior citizens, this may well change when Thomas Cook and others start bringing in older travellers to India, some of which could have OAP travel insurance.
