Travellers of all ages this summer are being warned to bear their luggage in mind and ensure they are covered by an adequate travel or senior travel insurance.

An average of 10,000 mishandled-luggage complaints were filed by passengers, those both with and without travel insurance, against the larger U.S. airlines last year according to figures from Consumer Reports, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports.

Lost luggage can cause a whole range of problems for travellers whatever their age, whether they have travel insurance or not, but a few carefully thought out actions can save you a lot of stress.

Firstly try to take your luggage as carry-on, as this will save the hassle of queues at the carousel and save the nightmare of it going astray.

If you are planning a longer trip and do need a bigger bag, ensure that you keep essentials such as toiletries, medication, a change of clothes and itinerary in your hand luggage.

Finally, don't forget to take out a travel insurance which covers you for lost luggage and remember to keep a copy of your travel insurance documents with you.
