11 March 2006  Half a million over 65's travelling uninsured
Almost half a million over 65s travelled abroad last year without travel insurance, new research has shown.

Sainsbury's Bank (SB) found that despite the financial risk that many place themselves in, those aged over 65 accounted for 14 per cent of all travellers who went on holiday last year without any cover.

Over 400,000 people aged over 55 failed to take out a policy before they went on holiday, resulting in nearly one million travellers over the age of 55 holidaying without any cover, emphasising the need for people to shop around for senior travel insurance.

Commenting on the findings, Karen Preston, travel insurance manager for SB, said: "Travel insurance is essential for anyone going abroad, even if they are just planning a long weekend.

"Last year, we estimated that there could have been around 241,000 travel insurance claims for medical or hospital care alone."

SB's research revealed that roughly 3.3 million in total travelled abroad without insurance last year.
