17 July 2007  Government 'could save pensioners from poverty'
Recently-published research has claimed that half a million pensioners could be released from poverty if the government takes action to ensure the full take-up of means tested benefits.

The report, undertaken by the Institute of Fiscal Studies on behalf of elderly charity Help the Aged, claims that full adoption of Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit and Pension Credit will take 500,000 pensioners out of poverty, with a further 500,000 being relieved of deep poverty.

Furthermore, the study claims that pensioner poverty levels will remain static over the coming decade without radical reform of the pensions system.

Anna Pearson, policy manager for the charity, said: "This report is the undeniable proof that pensioner poverty can be overcome.

"In terms of options for tackling it, the government is spoilt for choice."

She added that an automatic payment of benefits to pensioners would make a significant difference to half a million lives instantly, providing a cost-effective means of dealing with the problem of pensioner poverty.

Personal finance advice firm the Motley Fool recently reported that three million Britons are making spending sacrifices in their current life in order to enjoy an improved standard of living when they retire.
