19 September 2006  'Golden age' travellers seeking adventure
Retired people are looking to make use of their senior travel insurance for ever-adventurous trips abroad, new research has found.

The study by AA Travel Insurance claims that 22 per cent of retired people want to try hot air ballooning, with safaris, camping, learning to fly and scuba diving also getting a mention by those surveyed.

Furthermore, 26 per cent of elderly travellers are electing to choose more adventurous destinations than five years ago, including Australia and the Far East.

Alison Crossley, manager at AA Travel Insurance said: "Exotic destinations are much more accessible now and older people aren't letting age get in the way of having a good time and exploring the world."

Ms Crossley saw the shift towards more daring breaks in newer destinations as a positive move for mature travellers, though urged that holidaymakers make sure they are adequately covered by policies such as OAP travel insurance for any activities they intend to take.

Travellers of all ages were reminded by the Health Protection Agency in June to take necessary precautions against malaria when travelling to exotic locations where the disease may be present.
