26 August 2006 Foreign Office issues travel tips
Many Britons travelling abroad are neglecting to take basic precautions, including photocopying their passport and purchasing travel insurance or senior travel insurance, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) reports.
The study, entitled British Behaviour Abroad, is part of the FCO's ongoing Know Before You Go campaign and highlights examples of Britons not adopting necessary safety measures when travelling overseas.
"Failing to take travel insurance can cost a lot more than you think," the government says.
"35 per cent of us admit to not always taking out full travel insurance when we go abroad," it continues.
At the same time, the government's Identity and Passport Service website has warned that 62 per cent of Britons are neglecting to photocopy their passport before travel.
It warns that even if standard travel insurance or travel insurance over 65 has been bought as recommended, temporary passport applications will take much longer to process if copies of details are unavailable in the event of loss or theft.
