26 July 2007  Floods 'cause devastation for the elderly'
In the past weeks inclement weather has seen the UK suffer its worst floods in over six decades, with elderly Britons especially vulnerable to the effects, it has been reported.

Help the Aged has called on citizens to make sure that their older neighbours and friends are taken care of in the difficult conditions, urging individuals to offer to pick up supplies for the elderly who may otherwise struggle.

Daniel Pearson, director of community services at the charity, said: "The floods will inevitably cause distress and worry.

"Many vulnerable older people will struggle to cope."

He added that the organisation would continue to work in conjunction with local councils in order to ensure the safety of older Britons, offering its expertise and services to those that need it, while allowing the emergency services to conduct their vital work.

The Met Office today announced that the past three months have seen record rainfall, with 387.6 mm of rain for the period across England and Wales already making it the wettest May to July period since records began over 200 years ago.
